How One Golden Retriever Inspired a Day of Kindness, Comfort, and Connection
Every pet leaves paw prints on our hearts, but some leave them on entire communities.
Each year on August 22, we celebrate Never Bean Better Day, a heartfelt observance honoring Bean, a Golden Retriever whose gentle nature and unwavering compassion brought comfort to thousands of people. Bean’s story is a beautiful reminder that our pets don’t just enrich our lives—they have the power to help heal others as well.
At Animal Works, this day holds a special meaning because we see the incredible bond between people and animals every single day. Whether they’re offering unconditional love at home or serving as certified therapy animals in hospitals and schools, dogs have an extraordinary ability to bring hope during life’s most difficult moments.
Meet Bean: The Dog Who Inspired a National Day
Bean was born on August 22, 2009, and from an early age displayed the calm, friendly temperament that would make him an exceptional therapy dog.
By just two years old, Bean became a certified therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Throughout his life, he visited hospitals, nursing homes, schools, rehabilitation centers, and countless community events, sharing comfort with patients, families, healthcare workers, and students alike.
His quiet presence, wagging tail, and gentle personality reminded people that sometimes the greatest medicine isn’t found in a prescription—it’s found in the unconditional love of a dog.
In 2017, Never Bean Better Day was established to celebrate Bean’s birthday while recognizing the remarkable work performed by therapy animals everywhere.
The Healing Power of Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs are specially trained to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. Unlike service dogs, who perform specific tasks for an individual with a disability, therapy dogs volunteer alongside their handlers to brighten the lives of many people.
They can often be found:
-
Visiting patients in hospitals
-
Comforting residents in nursing homes
-
Helping children improve reading confidence at schools and libraries
-
Supporting people during rehabilitation
-
Providing emotional comfort after traumatic events
-
Helping reduce stress in healthcare settings
Scientific research continues to show what many pet owners already know—spending time with animals can help lower stress, reduce feelings of anxiety, encourage social interaction, and even contribute to improved emotional well-being.
Sometimes, a wagging tail says more than words ever could.
Every Pet Can Be Someone’s Greatest Comfort
While not every dog becomes a certified therapy animal, every pet has the potential to make a tremendous difference in someone’s life.
They greet us after long days.
They stay close when we’re feeling down.
They celebrate life’s happiest moments and quietly sit beside us during the hardest ones.
At Animal Works, we witness these relationships every day. We see devoted owners doing everything they can to keep their beloved companions healthy, and we see the unwavering loyalty pets return in abundance.
That bond is truly something special.
Caring for the Animals Who Care for Us
Therapy dogs spend countless hours bringing joy to others, and just like every pet, they rely on routine veterinary care to stay healthy enough to continue their important work.
Regular wellness exams, vaccinations, dental care, nutrition, exercise, and preventive care all help ensure our canine companions can enjoy long, active, and happy lives.
Whether your dog is a certified therapy animal, an adventurous hiking partner, or simply the best cuddle buddy you’ve ever known, their health is worth protecting.
Celebrating Never Bean Better Day
This August 22, consider taking a little extra time to celebrate the special pet in your life.
You might:
-
Spend extra quality time together.
-
Take them on their favorite walk or adventure.
-
Give them a healthy new toy or treat.
-
Schedule their annual wellness exam if they’re due.
-
Thank the therapy dogs and volunteers who make a difference in your community.
-
Consider volunteering with your own dog if they have the right temperament and training.
Small acts of love often mean the most to our four-legged family members.
Thank You to the Pets Who Heal Hearts
Never Bean Better Day is about more than one remarkable Golden Retriever. It’s about recognizing the incredible impact animals have on our lives every single day.
They don’t ask for much in return—just love, care, and a place beside us.
At Animal Works, we’re honored to help care for the pets who bring so much comfort, laughter, and unconditional love to their families. Today, we celebrate Bean, every therapy animal who continues his legacy, and every beloved pet who makes the world a little brighter simply by being there.
Because sometimes, the very best medicine has four paws, a wagging tail, and a heart full of unconditional love. ❤️
