Every September, during the third week of the month, we pause to celebrate Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week—a time to shine a spotlight on the dogs and cats who are often overlooked in shelters. These pets may be older, have special medical needs, or simply don’t “fit the mold” of what some adopters think they want—but they are just as deserving of love, safety, and a forever home.

At Animal Works we believe every pet’s life has value. We’re proud to support the rescues and organizations in our community that work tirelessly to give these animals a second chance.

What Makes a Pet “Less-Adoptable”?

The truth is, no pet should ever wear that label. But in shelters, some animals tend to get passed over again and again.

These can include:

  • Senior pets who still have so much love to give

  • Pets with medical needs that may require extra care

  • Shy or anxious pets who just need patience and understanding

  • Big dogs or certain breeds that may be unfairly judged

  • Bonded pairs that need to stay together

Despite the label, these pets often become the most loyal, loving companions once they’re given a chance.

How Our Rescue Partners Make a Difference

We’re honored to work alongside some amazing local rescue groups who specialize in helping pets that others might overlook—here are just a few:

  • Life Is Better Rescue — Committed to saving animals of all ages and conditions, ensuring each one finds a safe, loving home.

  • Animal Rescue of the Rockies — Helps connect “less-adoptable” pets with families who see their worth, no matter their age or background.

  • From Forgotten to Forever — Focuses on rescuing overlooked pets and giving them the care, surgeries, and second chances they deserve.

  • Big Bones Canine Rescue — Focused on saving large-breed dogs who are often overlooked, giving gentle giants the second chance they deserve.

These partners show us every day that there is no such thing as an “unwanted” pet—just pets waiting for the right person to see them.

How You Can Help

  • Adopt, if you can: Open your heart to a senior dog, a shy cat, or a pet with special needs.

  • Foster: Short-term fostering makes a huge difference for animals waiting for homes.

  • Donate or volunteer: Support rescues with your time, supplies, or financial gifts.

  • Spread the word: Share available pets on social media—you never know who might fall in love.
