National Rescue Dog Day is an annual observance on May 20th to raise awareness about the dogs in shelters who are waiting for their forever homes. There is a vast number of incredible pups in shelters around the country ready for adoption and a new chance at life!

Here’s what you can do to celebrate and help:

  • Adopt a rescue dog: Consider adopting a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization.
  • Volunteer at a shelter: Offer your time and help with tasks like walking dogs, grooming, or providing care.
  • Donate to a shelter: Donate money or supplies to ensure shelter pets get the food, blankets, vaccines, and any medical care or surgeries they need.
  • Foster a dog: Provide temporary care for a dog in need while they await adoption.
  • Spay or neuter your pets: This helps prevent overpopulation and reduces the number of dogs in shelters.
  • Raise awareness: Share information about National Rescue Dog Day and the importance of adopting rescue dogs.

Canine companions come in all shapes and sizes, makes and models. Although we don’t always know a tremendous amount about each rescue dog’s history, what conditions they endured, or how they were treated by people prior to arriving at the shelter, this must be taken into consideration.  All these factors contribute to who a dog is when you see them up for adoption.

Be sure to do your research before you adopt a rescue dog! Many rescue dogs are mixed breeds, so can be a combination of different temperaments, genetic traits, and predisposition to certain medical conditions. Consider what type of personality and energy level would be a good fit for your family and lifestyle. Rescue organizations are happy to provide resources and tell you about the individual needs of each adoptable dog. Adding a new dog to your pack requires plenty of love, patience, and training!
