November marks the national observance of pet cancer awareness. Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for domestic dogs and cats in the U.S. By spreading the word to help educate pet owners this month, we raise awareness about how to best protect our furry family members. Although cancer in animals continues to increase over the years, so do the advances in veterinary care for early detection and treatment.

Common Types of Pet Cancer:

  • Lymphoma
  • Splenic (spleen) cancer
  • Hepatic (liver) cancer
  • Thoracic (chest) cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Anal Sac cancer
  • Oral Cancer
  • Brain or Spinal Cord cancer

Here are some things you can do to help prevent cancer risks:

  • Get regular checkups: Annual exams with your veterinarian can help detect cancer early.
  • Watch for signs: Keep an eye on any changes in your pet’s health.
  • Reduce exposure to toxins: Avoid secondhand smoke, pesticides, and herbicides, which can increase the risk of cancer.
  • Keep your pet at a healthy weight: Provide nutritious food and exercise.
  • Spay or neuter: Consider spaying or neutering your pet at the appropriate age.

If your pet has been diagnosed with cancer and needs surgery, or you have any further questions, give us a call today.
