In honor of February being Pet Dental Health Month, we’d like you to meet one of our rockstar patients named Pirate!
Mr. Pirate is a 10-year-old toy poodle who is loved by all! His spunky 11-lb self also comes with a sweet demeanor and lots of snuggles. According to his owners, “Pirate is a homebody and will find a lap to cuddle in anywhere. He loves everyone he meets and just wants to be loved on 24/7.”
This handsome boy has had 2 dental procedures performed at Animal Works Veterinary Surgery over the last couple of years. Although Pirate doesn’t have the same number of teeth he started out with prior to the dental procedures, that’s not holding him back one bit!

In general, dogs and cats who need to have multiple extractions as they age over the years recover and adapt very well to having less teeth. Extractions can be performed for several reasons including gum disease, broken/fractured teeth, or tooth decay. After eliminating the source of oral pain, disease, or infection, pets enjoy a much happier and healthier mouth regardless of missing teeth.
After the 2-week post-dental diet of soft/wet food during the recovery period, pets who have more of a hankering for hard crunchy kibble often prefer to go back to their food of choice. Since dogs and cats don’t always chew their food completely, it is an easy transition. The proof is in the pudding with Pirate as his owners noted, “His favorite guilty pleasure is white cheddar popcorn!”
We celebrate how much of a trooper Pirate has been in our care! Keep smiling, buddy!
Thanks to Pirate’s loving family, here are some pictures of him throughout the years as young whippersnapper…

P.S. Pirate’s “little brother” Charlie, shown in the above pictures alongside Pirate, is all grown up into a 65lb boy himself!
